First Alert Moves to Recyclable PET Plastics for Product Packaging

Aurora, IL (PRWEB) April 16, 2008 -- First Alert, a leader in home safety products, announces it is phasing out the use of PVC plastics in its packaging in favor of the more recyclable PET plastic. The change affects packaging for First Alert's extensive line of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

First Alert® alarms are packaged in clear plastic "clamshells," a packaging style popular with consumers because it allows them to see products. First Alert made the decision to switch from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) clamshells to those produced with PET (polyethylene terephthalate) to increase the likelihood that its product packaging will be recycled. The redesigned plastic clamshells also feature an "easy-open" tear strip, which eliminates the need for a scissors or other sharp object to open the packaging.

"This change demonstrates First Alert's commitment to environmental sustainability," said Debbie Hanson, director of external affairs for BRK Brands/First Alert. "We are evaluating our business to identify opportunities to reduce waste and conserve resources. PET plastics are easily recyclable, which was one of the primary reasons we made the change."

Commonly used to produce soda and water bottles, PET is a thermoplastic polymer resin and assigned a recycling indentification code of "1", indicating it is the most recyclable plastic resin available.

First Alert has also decreased the overall size of its smoke and CO alarm packaging in an effort to reduce the amount of resources used for packaging.

First Alert smoke and carbon monoxide alarm packaging will also make it easier to identify the type of alarm they are looking for and specific features. Smoke alarms are now packaged in a predominantly red color scheme. Carbon monoxide alarms can be identified by their blue packaging and combination alarms come in purple packaging. Large, identifiable icons on the packaging denote features and make it easy for consumers to select models that meet their specific needs.
